The Mcfarland Clan that once inhabited the west banks of Loch Lomond in Scotland had a reputation of having a little bit of a chip on their shoulders. Staunchly independent and a little mischievous, they forged the clan motto, "This I'll Defend". What were they defending? Land.
At one point the locals began to refer to the moon as "McFarland's Lantern" due to the belief that McFarland's used it's light for illumination so they could steal horses at night. I like to tell myself that they were stealing back horses but who really knows. That practice was abandoned long before I was born but there are traces of that independence that persist to this day among the modern clan.
I was surprised to discover in recent years that "Mc" means "son". Taken together, I am a son of the far land. This couldn't be more fitting. There is something mystic about the ties we have to the land, and especially lands yet to be explored. I feel a sense of urgency to experience it all and defend our public lands, in particular National Parks, from being turned into parking lots. My drive to explore the National Parks with my family and forge connections with these incredible spaces combined with my 20 years experience as a full time photographer is the inspiration behind this endeavor.
With the exception of a couple years I spent living on the Italian island of Sicily I have spent my life in the wide open west of Utah and Arizona. The west is a part of me. From a young age my dad began taking me into the backcountry of Yellowstone. My love for National Parks is deeply connected with family. These are more than just places. They are woven into my memories of the people I love. I hope you feel that same sense of wonder and nostalgia as you experience these images on your walls. -Casey
Every time I am in the National Parks I feel a connection to John Muir, the original wild man. Not only do we share a common ancestry (Scotland) but I am deeply inspired by his ingenuity and resourcefulness. Without a doubt, his sentiments that the wild places of America are our cathedrals is alway in the back of my mind.
Our signature print is a dye sublimation printed on metal. It is a stand alone product that hangs 3/4 inch off the wall and doesn't require a frame.
You will also notice I have a deep love of Black and White. In a modern home or office it can be a stunning and spellbinding presence for clients and family to gawk at for years.
For a two year period I lived on the island of Sicily, learned the Italian language and fell in love with the culture and people. I have been commissioned on many assignments in Italy and pinch myself every time I get paid to go back.
